The Natural EM Meter DC Field Single Axis

In addition to measuring changes in extremely weak static (DC or "natural") electric and magnetic fields, the NATURAL EM METER gives a readout of radio/microwave signal strength in mW/cm² and has and audible alarm. The threshold of the alarm can be set at any level from 0.01 mW/cm² to 1 mW/cm². Using both a needle type meter and audible tone, it detects: radio transmitters, geomagnetic storms, unusual magnetic solar activity, electrical activity of thunderstorms, leaky microwave ovens, magnetized rocks or bed frames, analog cellular phone EMF output, and concealed surveillance bugs. Natural EM Meter (Cat. # SPI151)....................$199.95   

Of the Trifield family of meters, this is the only one I have personally used. It is useful for some things in my work, but for mobile measurements I don't regard it as highly as other paranormal researchers.

In ghost detecting work, it's legendary sensitivity generally demands that you keep it stationary and isolated, in which case it's weak audible alert and hard to read in the dark / at a distance meter movement are a serious impediment. These can be overcome by the LED & DC output modifications which run about $80 extra and require an extra 1- 2 week lead time. Email for details.

Since this is a DC meter, be aware that it will pick up the Earth's magnetic field when moved or rotated suddenly.

SINGLE AXIS ANALOG

With the push of a button, this simple and accurate gaussmeter measures the level of magnetic field emitted by all common electrical appliances and equipment. This is one of the better inexpensive meters on the market. It has a fast response time, wide range and visible in the dark. Very easy to use, but you have to hold down on the button constantly and it only reads in one axis. Narrow detection range and limited accuracy too.

There are some who like and use this meter, but I find the Cell Sensor meter to be a little better overall. It's tricky to use this one correctly as you have to be careful how you hold it and the range is switched by hitting the activation switch again. Has a Geiger style audio alert, but not visible in darkness. 

DIGITAL EMF METERS

Digital readout means that it is much easier to see the actual reading, but the slower update time may miss quick paranormal spikes. Also, the single axis makes it prone to inaccurate readings. Okay for an entry level digital, but resolution is only down to 0.1 mG.

Switchable 1:3 Axis Gaussmeter (Cat. #SPI153) ..... $279.00

One of my favorite reference meters, it combines great non-frequency weighted RMS accuracy, broad range, fast response time and an easy to read display.

The ONLY downside is that the power switch is located on the side and it has a very nasty habit of getting switched on accidentally. This combined with it's inexplicable power drain characteristics (it will drain within a day) means that I have spent a LOT on 9V batteries with this thing.
